Here is our full FAQ, aka all of the guidelines and suggestions we could think of. If you're not sure about something, check here first, and if you still don't have an answer, send us an email. There is also a g-doc version of this FAQ that you can read here
Below are some suggestions for how you should format any entries you post here. These aren't hard and fast rules and you're welcome to edit, add, or remove fields as desired. Ideally, your header should be brief but informative and the body of your entry, be it text, images, or otherwise, should all be under a cut (How to use cuts).
If you're new to DW and unfamiliar with html or css, not to worry, as DW a rich text editor like tumblr. You'll see it on the top right of the text field on the Post an Entry page. Though if you would like to start using html or maybe learn new ways to style your entries, we reccomend this excellent html styling primer by
girlrock
If you would like to include links to your work posted in other places in addition to or instead of posting it under a cut here, do so with hyperlinks between the summary/details and the cut text using:
Subject Lines
Image-based entries such as collages, web weaves, zines, gifsets, etc.
You are welcome to crosspost image-heavy entries from your Tumblr or wherever else. We are well aware that dealing with images in Dreamwidth can be pretty tricky. To deal with this, if you have multiple images in a list or in a grid like the average Tumblr gifset, we reccomend using Chlor's Icon Table Generator. Use the image links from Tumblr or whatever third-party image hosting site you like (Imgur, Flickr, etc.) and fiddle around with the settings. Once you're satisfied, copy the generated code into your entry within the cut. From there you can edit the size of your images if they're too large. Check out w3schools for more information. If you would like to see how a 4-gif set can look, examples by one of the mods can be found here.
Before you post your entry, use the preview feature to make sure everything is formatted correctly and there is no broken html. Keep in mind that cut texts are always shown expanded in previews.
We want everyone, including minors, to curate their own experiences and to safely engage or disengage with content as they see fit. Effective tagging is essential for fostering this practice.
In the event Discord server, we provide general, all-access channels for posting WIPs, discussing ideas, calling for betas and pickers, and sharing finished works, as well as restricted, opt-in NSFW versions for works and discussions involving sexual content, non-/dub-con, graphic violence and gore, and substance use.
We want you to do whatever inspires you. No topics, ratings, or warnings are off-limits. AUs, explicit content, any pairing you can dream of, anything that has ever been considered a dead dove, and whatever else you can think of are all fair game, provided you tag and warn appropriately.
However, as this is a fiction-fandom event, we ask that you keep it local, meaning:
Sign-ups open 1 April and will remain open until 30 June, allowing anyone to jump in whenever they like. Upon event start, or for late sign-ups, you will receive a welcome email with all links.
You will also be notified of the event’s closing on 30 June. Save for replies to any questions, your contact information will not be used otherwise and will be deleted upon even conclusion.
This event takes place over two (2) months: 1 May - 30 June 2025. The AO3 collection will only be open during this time.
All works must be new, i.e. never posted. You are welcome to dust off old WIPs and complete works for the challenge in advance, assuming the final product meets the set guidelines and is a complete work.
As far as we know, the microbang is a new type of event, at least the way we’ve chosen to structure it. This is an event for small works.
When it comes to text-based entries, there is a maximum word count of 750 words. We especially encourage the really small stuff: drabbles, haiku, 6x9s, and other ficlets.
Additionally, we’ve elected to pay specific attention to commenters and comment leaving, which you can read more on below.
Despite the name, this is not a paired event or an exchange. Though you are welcome to collaborate with others and create works together, as well as create works jointly for this challenge and others, provided it adheres to the rules and requirements of all events.
If you would like to team up with someone, or multiple someones, go ahead.
If you would like to combine events, please make sure that your entry meets the requirements of all events. Our minimum word count, technically, is one (1) word for standard word count combination purposes. When in doubt, reach out to the administrators of the other event(s). For example, joint RoyJamie Bingo and Be A Goldfish text-based entries must have between 301 and 750 words, not including drabbles and other standardized limited forms.
We want you to create whatever you want. Something small, short, and reasonably quick to produce, ideally. Something that you feel is equivalent to 750 words or less. Below is a list of suggestions.
In the interest of accessibility and inclusion, all visual art, photographs, etc. must have an image description as part of the original post.
Fic - 750 words maximum
Art - traditional & digital
Other - If you feel it’s equivalent, we won’t stop you. If you’re not sure, reach out with your idea and we can talk about it.
When it comes to sharing your works you have plenty of options:
You can post works anywhere else you like, too, though these three are the only official event accounts. If you post something elsewhere, drop a link on Tumblr and tag us or post an entry with a link to our Dreamwidth community. You are welcome to crosspost the same entries across these places, we will not crosspost on your behalf.
After you post an entry, no matter where it is, fill out the Entry Submission Form. This will help us keep track of everyone’s contributions and get a better sense of general engagement. One work per form. If you posted the same work in multiple places, you will be able to compile them all on the same form. When the event concludes we will compile all entries into a single masterlist.
Comments make fandom go round. They make our incredible creator friends feel good, and getting replies to comments you’ve left feels pretty great too, trust. Further, we firmly believe that leaving feedback is a good fandom habit.
For anyone who leaves a comment- creators (practicing and non-practicing), habitual commenters, and even lurkers looking to lurk no longer- We want people to feel encouraged to engage with works they like.
To keep track of this, we have a very simple Comment Milestone Form. As you leave comments throughout, we encourage you to keep track of them however you like. How you choose to define a comment is up to you. AO3, tumblr comments, reblogs, and tags, as well as dreamwidth replies are all perfectly acceptable and highly encouraged.
Milestones - 5, 10, 20, 30+. Increments beyond 30 will be added as necessary. We’ll play that one by ear. Just fill out the form to let us know which one you’ve hit.
This isn’t required and is more for us to keep track of engagement. And to let you brag and flex that you’re leaving comments. Unlike a regular entry though, we will not be fact checking any milestone claims.
You will still be eligible for comment acknowledgement on your final banner even if you don’t submit any intermediate milestones throughout the course of the event. Scout’s Honor.
Comment Resources
Additionally, we’ve compiled a few (unaffiliated) resources for anyone looking to get into the habit and hone their skills:
Post-match victory lap! Microbang: complete. Upon the conclusion of the event, we will open a final form. In that you will only be asked to give a numerical summary of all your contributed comments and fanworks.
Included in this form is banner & token claiming, which will be distributed by email as swiftly as possible and in order of request.
Additionally, on this form you may link to any masterposts and/or rec lists you make. These can be dreamwidth entries (on your journal and/or in the event comm), tumblr posts, or AO3 collections. Feel free to take a look at the form once it opens and think about your answers or prep anything you may want to link there. We will similarly post a master-masterpost once the form is closed.
To the victors go the spoils. Though the real reward is creating, commenting, and participating in a community event, we still want to hand out some laurels. Thus, we will be awarding all participants in our event who submit a summary with event-specific banners upon request.
Additionally, on the same form, for anyone who tried something new, such as left their first comment, posted their first fanwork, or experimented with a new fannish medium: They will be eligible for a sort of achievement token, also doled out in order of request.
Participation in this portion of the event, as with every portion of the event, is not in any way mandatory. We just recommend it: give yourself a pat on the back for all your hard work, brag to us about it, and get a cool graphic or two!
(Example banners and tokens can be seen in the corresponding section of the google doc)
