resolutions for 2026

I'm not customarily much of a new year's resolutions person (I tend to agree with the line of thinking that they're mostly just people making overambitious goals and setting themselves up for failure), but I have two this year.

One is to eat without distractions (primarily screens). This primarily means not eating in front of the computer/projector or while scrolling on my phone, but I'm thinking it includes books and podcasts too. Basically anything attention-grabbing that prevents me from being present with my meal and my own thoughts. So far over the first couple days of the year I've enjoyed having the radio on one of the classical stations and just looking out the window. (My kitchen window has a lovely view of trees, which makes this very nice!) This has a couple of purposes/motivations: one is that I think the driver of a lot of distractability/stimulation-seeking is a fundamental discomfort at just sitting with my own thoughts, which horrifies me because I think enjoying or at least being at peace with your own company is one of the cornerstones of a good life (after all, your own self is the one thing that's always with you every moment of your entire life, barring some weird corner cases) and I can tell that my instinctive twitchy attempts to get away from it are the opposite of conducive towards being how I want to be, and the other is that I'd like to shift towards eating more foods that are of a type and quality where it's pleasant to eat them while actually paying attention to what they are and what the experience of eating them is like. This isn't an "absolutely 100% of the time" rule; I'm planning to make exceptions for social eating on video calls with friends and family and for special occasions/traditional snacks while watching certain events, but in general the idea is that exceptions should happen for a reason. Like being a kid again, getting to eat on the couch while watching something on TV should feel like a special treat.

The other is to attend at least one cultural or social event per month. The parameters for this are pretty broad; it could be a live event like a wrestling show or a play or a hockey game, or a purely social event like a knitting meetup or a group bike ride, or something hands-on like an art class, or some other category of thing I haven't even thought of yet. The point is to go live in the world. Museum visits totally count as well, even though they aren't "events" in the sense of being externally organized.

I have some fitness and creative goals as well, but they aren't "NYRs" per se, for the reasons mentioned at the top of this post.

Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I've been wanting to use this space more, and it's been a long time since I posted regularly so this challenge looked like a fun way to ease back into it -

Hi, I'm Dances (not my wallet name, that's on a need-to-know basis.) I'm a queer trans Desi guy in his late thirties living in a suburb of one of the larger Northern cities in England, Manchester. I moved here about seven years ago as I wanted to be nearer some family who were more accepting of my transition than my parents were and are.

I recently finished studying for an undergraduate degree in Sociology, and am now doing a CILIP certified part-time postgrad course focusing on being a librarian. (I know the public field in the UK is dying after years of austerity - as much as I love public libraries, I'm more interested in something like academic or health librarianship or related fields, I don't have the temperament for public facing work.)

I'm also long-term disabled due to a small pile of mental health issues - so far I've been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and ADHD, and spent years trying to be seen for a autism diagnosis but the paperwork was lost somewhere and I gave up. The diagnosis wouldn't mean any extra support, as far as I know; it also further limits my future emigration options as many countries refuse to grant residency to folk with that diagnosis.

Talking of, I have a fiance (he/him, sey/sem pronouns.) Sey live in (Deep South state) in the US. Neither of us are blessed with extra cash so IRL visits have been extremely limited over the past seven and a half years of online dating; sey're hopefully coming to visit me this year and I am bouncing out of my skin with excitement :D We plan to marry once I've finished my current postgrad, though immigration stuff is hellish even with our US and UK passports and borders shouldn't exist.

Cutie patooteys.

I have decided to begin using Dreamwidth more in order to participate in fandom events and kinkmemes. I don't think my personal journal will have much on it... Maybe I could use it like a real journal or blog? Image posting is too tedious.

I don't know how to link to my posts on other communities. That would be most useful. Currently I am posting on Be a Goldfish.

+ Two days into the new year, two episodes into season 1 of The X-Files. I know we all agree Gillian Anderson is hot stuff, but are we talking about it enough?? Also, I remember being very annoyed at Scully's reluctance to believe in the supernatural as the show went on, given how much she'd experienced by then, but WOW does she have the patience of a saint in the beginning. Mulder is lucky he's cute. Also also, they really did smoosh these two together like a pair of dolls they wanted to kiss right from the start. Shippers must have been eating the wallpaper by episode five.

Can't wait for less UFOs, more bizarre horror cases.

+ Went to the local mall with my mom today, and I am now the proud owner of a 50% off memory foam pillow. Fingers crossed I vibe with it.

+ While my mom was looking for things for her calendar, I happened to spy a shiny new hardback of Mona Awad's Bunny, with funky pink bunny endpapers and sprayed edges. And so, silly me, with the goal of reading my damn physical books, came home with yet another physical book. Le sigh. At least I'm 98% sure I will vibe with this book something fierce.

+ Just did the final tagging for the last check in post of [community profile] rec_cember. I'll be tallying the recs and fandoms covered tomorrow but spoiler: it's A LOT. If you're looking for something to read, I highly recommend having a look at the tag set. We got a really good variety.

+ Stranger Things has finally ended. I feel like they yanked Nancy out of the fic I recommend a couple of days ago and shoved her in there, and that was endlessly amusing. I just sat there squinting at it for a minute, going full headtilt. They very much indulged in a lengthy wrap-up that some will hate and others appreciate very much *cough* fandom *cough*. The final battle was extremely 80s. Also, what was the costuming department smoking? I am saving this quote for later. )

+ It's Snowflaking Time yay!

#1 The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Just going to nab my sidebar intro real quick: Spoiler-adverse. Migratory fandom gopher. Vids occasionally, but never finishes. Also nursing a PhotoShop addiction. #1 fandom is awesome ladies.

Honestly just hope to see more people around ♥ (195 comments on the challenge post already, so that seems very likely lol) Not sure if the Create A Challenge Challenge is rolling around again, but if so, I am plotting.

Love You More with Every Breath, by antonomasia09

“It would be nice,” Kiem mused, easing himself down gingerly onto a convenient bit of debris, “if, just once, we could take a vacation together without nearly dying.”
