Summary:Goren trusts himself but will Eames?
Goren isn't afraid to go out on a limb, to turn a vague suspicion into a theory and then to run with the theory until it turns into a firm certainty. What he is afraid to do is to try and examine his thought processes too closely. Other cops call it going on their gut but Goren understands that instincts are based on experience and knowledge. That every time he follows his gut he is in fact using intuition to inform his conclusions. An intuition that has been honed over years of being a detective. He trusts his gut implicitly so why can't anybody else?
"We can't arrest him based on this." Detective Alex Eames looks across the desk at him, her eyebrows raised. "All we'll be doing is making him angry."
This is their first case together, he shouldn't expect too much. But it's disappointing. He'd hoped that Eames might have been able to understand him. Goren has a string of unsatisfactory partnerships behind him. He wishes he could say he's getting used to it.
"He'll slip up," Goren says, he doesn't want to give up so easily. "A man like that, he won't be able to resist showing us how clever he is."
Eames looks at him and he knows she's thinking, takes one to know one.
"Okay."
He sees her glance over at the captain's office. He could tell her that if this goes wrong, that if they don't get the confession he knows they will get, he will take the blame squarely on his shoulders. But Goren strongly suspects that Eames has been told she is supposed to rein him in. Despite that he likes her. He thinks she'll be a good partner for him. Goren hopes so anyway.
